WELCOME
The LEAD (Learning and Educating About Disabilities) Foundation was organized in 2002 by a handful of parents familiar with the frustrations and difficulties of putting students with learning disabilities and/or AD/HD through the public school system.

The Foundation supports and educates the entire Colorado Springs community on issues relating to learning disabilities and AD/HD by hosting free Community Forums to the public, often featuring nationally known speakers and experts on learning disabilities, sponsoring a Parent Support Group to parents in the junior high and elementary schools, funding scholarships to students with learning disabilities and providing a community Resource Center of materials on Learning Disabilities and AD/HD.

In addition, the Foundation supports the unique LEAD program in the Cheyenne Mountain School District in fulfilling their mission to educate others about learning disabilities. Started in 1997, The LEAD program has built a reputation throughout the nation, as an exemplary curriculum for "Learning and Educating about Disabilities".

Replication of programs similar to LEAD in other high schools, which teach students with learning disabilities the importance of self-knowledge and self-advocacy skills, is one of the primary goals of the LEAD Foundation.

LEAD Alumni 2007-2008 Scholarship

A selection panel for the LEAD Foundation recently named Hillary Howes as the winner of the 2008 LEAD alumni scholarship. Hillary graduated from Cheyenne Mountain High School in 2005 and is currently a junior at The University of Northern Colorado, majoring in visual art graphic design. Hillary believes she would not be in college today if not for LEAD and states that LEAD presentations gave her the advocacy skills she now uses on a daily basis. "Every presentation gave me an opportunity to prove to myself that, if I can stand up and tell an audience of strangers about my disability, I can easily advocate to my teachers. Today, I am a successful college student, because I can openly talk about my disability".

Hillary continues to support the LEAD mission. She presented to Jefferson Country schools as a LEAD alumni, created a LEAD alumni group on Face Book, and has used her graphic design skills to assist in the creation of brochures for the LEAD program and the LEAD Foundation. In addition, Hillary wrote an article for the University of North Carolina’s LEAD replication manual on what LEAD has meant to her.

The LEAD alumni scholarship is a $1000.00 annual scholarship open to anyone who has participated in Cheyenne Mountain High School's LEAD program. The scholarship is for post-secondary use, including community college, graduate school and technical training. Past recipients of the scholarship include Adam Tucker (2002), Stanton Kensinger (2003), Katie Dunn (2004), Aggie Poje (2005) and Michelle Schultz (2006). Information on the 2008-2009 scholarship will be available on this website in late summer or early fall of 2008.
